Breast Cancer Disparities between African American and White Women in Wisconsin

چکیده
According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer health disparities are “adverse differences in cancer incidence (new cases), cancer prevalence (all existing cases), morbidity (cancer-related health complications), cancer mortality (deaths), cancer survivorship, and burden of cancer or related health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States.”1 These disparities arise from a complex interaction of population factors, such as race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, health behaviors, health status, and health insurance coverage. For instance, an African American woman living in a lowincome suburban area is more likely to experience structural barriers, such as lack of reliable transportation, resulting in limited health care system access. Limited access to health care services contributes to poor chronic disease management, thereby decreasing one’s likelihood of following breast cancer screening recommendations necessary for early breast cancer detection and prevention.

BACKGROUND Cancer health disparities by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geography are a top public health priority. Breast and colorectal cancer, in particular, have been shown to exhibit significant disparities and contribute a large proportion of morbidity and mortality from cancer. In addition, breast and colorectal cancer offer targets for prevention and control, including nutrit...
متن کاملDeterminants of breast cancer treatment delay differ for African American and White women.
BACKGROUND Timeliness of care may contribute to racial disparities in breast cancer mortality. African American women experience greater treatment delay than White women in most, but not all studies. Understanding these disparities is challenging as many studies lack patient-reported data and use administrative data sources that collect limited types of information. We used interview and medica...

BACKGROUND Cancer incidence and mortality rates have decreased over the last few decades, yet not all groups have benefited equally from these successes. This has resulted in increased disparities in cancer burden among various population groups. OBJECTIVE This study examined trends in absolute and relative disparities in overall cancer incidence and mortality rates between African American a...
